Rugby World Cup 2011 will be the first time that Russia has played in a Rugby World Cup tournament. When Russia achieved their goal of qualifying for RWC 2011 the sport of rugby in Russia went from anonymity to capturing the heart of the entire nation.
Rugby Union players and fans in Russia are excited about the future prospects of the sport and about seeing their national rugby team compete at the highest level at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Since qualifying for Rugby World Cup 2011, a large number of young players have become interested in playing rugby in Russia, and first-rate National Rugby Academy was established in 2006.
Russia did not play its first official rugby international until 1974 although the Soviet Union Rugby Union was established in 1936. By the mid 80’s the team from the Soviet Union was beating teams like Romania and Italy, and although invited to attend the inaugural Rugby World in New Zealand in 1987, they turned the offer down on political grounds.
Coached by Nikolay Nerush and assisted by former Wales flanker Kingsley Jones, the team from Russia will use the 2011 Rugby World Cup as a learning experience and to continue to grow the sport back home.
Russia are ranked 19th in the IRB world rankings, and for RWC 2011 are in Pool C with Australia, Ireland, Italy and USA. Russia’s opening Rugby World Cup game is against USA in New Plymouth on the 15th September, followed by Italy in Nelson on the 20th September. From there Russia travel to Rotorua to play Ireland on the 25th September, and the final Rugby World Cup pool game for Russia will be against Australia in Nelson on the 1st October.
Rugby World Cup 2011 will see Russia will enjoy Blenheim’s hospitality for training from 6th – 12th and 16th – 18th September, and will be hosted by New Plymouth from 13th – 15th September. Mt. Maunganui will be Russia’s team base from 21st – 23rd September, and the team will be in Rotorua from 24th – 27th September.
